A Website Sure to Help You Negotiate Your Way In and Around Many Cities

We just returned from a wonderful weekend spent in New York City. While there, I overheard a conversation about a website sure to benefit any city traveler. While not a new site, it's the first that I'm hearing about it. The site is called HopStop.com. It provides directions on public transportation in many major cities; this includes subways, buses, taxis, ferries, etc. It considers the time of day that you are traveling and offers alternate routes, also estimating the length of travel time. And, if you choose to walk (our personal favorite!), it also suggests the best route. There are many additional features on the website, but certainly the option to text the directions will come in very handy, for any traveler or local, on the go. Currently the site covers New York, Boston, London, Paris, Washington DC, Chicago, San Francisco, Long Island, New Jersey and Metro North. Follow HopStop on Twitter for all the latest news. And, be sure to share this blog posting with all your traveling friends.

As an aside, last week my son's friend was visiting from Maryland. When he was leaving, we sent him by train to NYC to catch a bus back to Maryland. (Like any good Mom,) I manually provided as much information as possible to guide him through NYC, particularly since he was not familiar with the city. This site would have provided me with all the details, and instead of printing, he would have had access to it right on his cell phone. How perfect!

Free Starbucks Ice Cream

Just in time for summer, if you are on Facebook, you can snag a coupon for a free pint of Starbucks ice cream. Read more here. It is best to try for the coupon just after the hour changes, when Starbucks replenishes the supply. Now this is one promotion that is hard to pass up! Grab one for yourself and share additional coupons with friends. (Thanks, Marc!)

To Bing or To Google?

Do you follow David Pogue in The New York Times? His articles are very informative, while taking a light approach to technology. (We saw him at a concert last week. He's a local.) Today's article, Bing, the Imitator, Often Goes Google One Better focuses on Bing, Microsoft's new search mechanism, which as the title claims, may not only rival Google, but actually surpass it! Something new to try. Have you experimented with it yet?

Microsoft Vulnerability (and a humorous site to check out)

Microsoft announced a vulnerability in Microsoft Video ActiveX which may be compromising the safety of your computer. This article provides a link to the Microsoft site where you can disable the software causing the problem.

On a more humorous note, while at dinner last night with longtime friends, I made mention of a rather unusual site I had heard about. While the site seems a bit off color, my friends encouraged me to include it on my blog. (Thanks Regina, Scott, Darice, Rick, Marc and Andy - - this posting is dedicated to all of you and the laughs we shared!) With that said, I apologize in advance if this offends anyone. It really is pretty hilarious, albeit a bit ridiculous. Rather than even describe this to you, since I know I cannot do it justice, take a moment and peruse the site. Who knows, perhaps next time you are at the movies, you may just be thanking Mom Knows Best for the tip. And, by the way, be sure to watch the large yellow "n" in the word "Run" at the top of the site as it undergoes a transformation (it may take a little time to change- be patient!). Are you smiling now? I hope so.
